Choosing the Right Country... and the Right Place Within It

Moving home is a big decision. Moving to another country is on a completely different level.

Most people begin by looking at properties. They scroll through beautiful villas with swimming pools, apartments overlooking the sea or country homes surrounded by mountains. Before long they've found somewhere they love, and only then do they start researching what it's actually like to live there.

Personally, I think that's the wrong way round.

A house can be extended, renovated or even completely rebuilt. Its location can't. Long after you've changed the kitchen, painted the walls or built a swimming pool, you'll still be living in the same town, driving the same roads, shopping in the same supermarkets and seeing the same people every day. That's why choosing the right location is every bit as important as choosing the right property.

Choose the Lifestyle Before the Property

Before you even begin looking at houses, spend some time thinking about the lifestyle you're hoping to create. Are you looking for peace and quiet or somewhere with plenty going on? Would you rather live close to the beach, in the mountains or in the middle of a busy town? Are good schools important, or are you thinking about retirement? Do you need fast internet for work? How important is being close to an airport if family and friends are likely to visit?

There aren't any right or wrong answers because everybody's idea of the perfect lifestyle is different. The important thing is being honest with yourself before falling in love with a property.

One mistake I see time and time again is people choosing a house first and then trying to convince themselves the location is right. It should really be the other way round. Choose the country first, then narrow it down to the region, then the town and finally start looking for the property. Houses come onto the market every day. Finding somewhere that genuinely feels like home is much harder.

Remember too that every country has different personalities. Northern Spain feels very different from southern Spain. The Algarve offers a completely different lifestyle to northern Portugal, and Costa Rica's Caribbean coast is nothing like its Pacific coast. Even towns an hour apart can have different weather, communities, property prices and ways of life. Never judge an entire country by one town or one holiday.

Experience Everyday Life

A holiday and everyday life are two very different things.

When you're on holiday you're relaxed. You eat out more often, visit the tourist attractions and overlook the little inconveniences because you're only there for a week or two.

Living somewhere is different.

If you can, spend time in the area before buying. Rent for a few weeks or even a few months. Go shopping where the locals shop, drive the roads during rush hour, visit the local hardware store, sit in a café on a rainy Tuesday morning and see what everyday life really feels like. Those ordinary moments will tell you far more than a holiday ever could.

It's also worth speaking to local people. Estate agents know property, but the people who live there know the area. Ask them what they love, what frustrates them and what they wish they'd known before moving there. Most people are happy to share their experiences, and you'll often learn things that never appear in glossy brochures or online videos.

When my family decided to move to Costa Rica, we thought we'd done everything right. We watched YouTube videos, read blogs, joined Facebook groups and spent months researching different parts of the country.

Eventually we settled on Sámara. On paper it seemed perfect. Beautiful beaches, a friendly expat community and everything we thought we wanted from our new life.

The reality was slightly different.

If this particular house wasn't for sale, would I still want to live here?

If the answer is yes, you've probably found the right location.

If the answer is no, keep looking.

The perfect property will always be easier to find than the perfect place to build your life.

I've bought, sold and lived in properties in different countries, and if there's one piece of advice I'd give anyone thinking about relocating, it's this...

Don't fall in love with a house before you've fallen in love with the place.

The property is where you'll sleep.

The location is where you'll make friends, discover your favourite café, celebrate birthdays, watch sunsets and build memories you'll carry for the rest of your life.

Take your time.

Explore more than one area.

Speak to local people.

Don't be afraid to change your mind.

Looking back, choosing Dominical instead of buying immediately in Sámara was one of the best decisions we ever made, and it reminded me that sometimes the right home isn't the first one you find. It's the one you discover after you've found the place that truly feels right.
